Hello Class of 2016

Congratulations! You’re almost done with your MBA! Please see below for some important information about the May 2016 Commencement Events.

  • Ceremony Overview
  • EWMBA Celebration (new!)
  • Next Steps
  • Beyond Yourself Fellows
  • Student Speaker Nominations

Ceremony Overview

Your commencement ceremony is scheduled for Friday, May 20 at 2PM in the Greek Theatre at UC Berkeley. No tickets are needed for the ceremony and you may invite an unlimited number of guests.

The ceremony will be followed by a reception from 4:00-5:30PM in the Haas Courtyard. Graduates in caps and gowns gain free entry to the reception. You will be provided with two free reception tickets for your guests, and will have the opportunity to purchase additional tickets for $5.00 each (children five and under will be admitted for free).  Tickets will be available for pick up and purchase in the EWMBA Program Office in May.

EWMBA Celebration

Please save the date for a special EWMBA Celebration to recognize the conclusion of your time with the EW Program.  This new event will be held at the DoubleTree Berkeley Marina on Friday, May 13 at 6:30PM. and will include dinner, awards, and will be the last official time for you to come together just as a class!  More information, including RSVP information, will be available soon, but for now, please save the date!

Next Steps

Here are the action items that you need to take:

  1. Please closely review the Commencement page on our EWMBA Student Website.
    1. Please pay special attention to the “Caps, Gowns, Hoods & Tassels” portion of our website.  We highly encourage you to get your cap, gown, hood and tassel as soon as possible.
  2. Please review the Graduation Checklist here for important deadlines.
    1. The Checklist will help you stay on track and avoid missing important deadlines as you finish your program
  3. Look out for the Commencement Survey.
    1. You will receive a survey in early April that will ask you three things:
      1. Your name as it should appear in the Commencement Program*
      2. Vote for Student Speaker (see nomination process below),
      3. Estimated count for reception guests. No RSVP is needed to attend the ceremony, however, your positive response will help us plan accordingly.

*December 2016 Grads: You are welcome to walk in this May’s commencement ceremony.  Whether or not you choose to attend, we will list your names in the commencement program, as “MBA Candidates” rather than “MBA Graduates.”

Beyond Yourself Fellows

EWMBA students who complete 60 hours of community service over their three years at Haas qualify to be recognized as a Beyond Yourself Fellow. Any student who intends to qualify for the program must record volunteer service in the Haas Student Directory by Wednesday, April 16.

  • To record your volunteer hours, sign into the Haas Student Directory and click on the “Service Hours” link at the top of the page to record your hours.
  • To fill out the form you’ll need dates of service, amount of time spent volunteering, and contact information for the organization.
  • If you volunteer through a Haas event, you can just put the Community Service Committee as your contact. Click “Save” and you’ll see a list of all of your events.

Student Speaker Nominations

We are looking for a graduating student eager to accept the honor of representing the Class of 2016 as a student speaker for the commencement ceremony. This is a unique opportunity to address all MBA graduates and their friends and family.  The Evening & Weekend and Full-Time MBA programs each select a student speaker to give a 5 minute commencement address.

If you would like to represent the EWMBA Program and your class, please complete this nomination form using these guidelines:

  • Submit a 1 to 2 paragraph statement explaining why you would like to be a commencement speaker and what you would talk about in your speech. These will be shared with the graduating class to vote on.
  • Optional link to YouTube videos (under 3 minutes) will also be accepted with your statement as a sample of your speaking.
  • The deadline to submit your statement is 9AM on Wednesday, March 30.

Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Don’t forget to keep up with the Graduation Checklist and be on the lookout for further information via email and in the Bear Necessities in the coming weeks!

Thank you and congratulations on graduating!
