Fall 2017 Elective Policy for the Class of 2019

Class of 2019:

We hope you’re enjoying your summer, whether it entails more classwork or a well earned rest from the first two semesters of core.

Before we enter into the thick of the Fall 2017 semester, we want to reiterate some key points about the pilot we’re running with your class to participate in the Add/Drop process so that you could potentially take a Fall 2017 elective..

Guiding Principles

  1. Taking electives is an option – not a requirement – for the Class of 2019 in Fall 2017. You don’t need to take electives this Fall to finish the program on time. The purpose of this pilot is to provide an opportunity to accelerate (if you wish to finish in less than 6 semesters) or to time shift workload from Spring 2018 to Fall 2017.

  2. Your cumulative GPA must be > 3.1 to sign up for electives.

  3. You can’t take Operations, Strategy or Innovation focused electives, because you have not completed these core courses yet. In practice, this means you can’t sign up for Entrepreneurship (EW295A.1), Business Model Innovation and Entrepreneurial Strategy (EW295M.1) or FORAD Simulation (EW296.2 – a new offering soon to be reflected on the Fall 2017 schedule).

  4. Class of 2018 students will have priority in the enrollment process.

  5. Total number of units for the semester, including 6 for core, can’t exceed 9.

Process Considerations

  1. You will be able to sign up for electives starting in Round 2 of Add/Drop (which starts on August 19).

  2. Ensure you don’t double book electives on top of your core courses.

  3. Requests to change cohorts merely to be able to sign up for a specific elective will not be entertained.

Consider Your Options

  1. You don’t have to take a fall elective.

  2. There are potential financial aid and unit limit implications for future semesters.

  3. You have 19 elective units so use them wisely.

  4. If there are no fall electives that appeal to you, wait for electives that align with your professional goals and/or personal interests.
